Will the converted files be bigger than the originals?

Usually, yes. HEIC compresses more efficiently than JPG, so expect JPG output around 1.5–2x the HEIC size at comparable visual quality, and PNG output considerably larger than that. That's the price of compatibility.

Is photo metadata (EXIF, GPS, capture date) preserved?

No — the conversion decodes the image pixels and writes a fresh file, so EXIF data including location is dropped. Treat that as a privacy feature when sharing publicly; if you need metadata kept, convert on a Mac via Preview or use a metadata-aware desktop tool.

When should I choose PNG instead of JPG?

Almost never for photos — JPG at quality 85+ is visually identical and far smaller. Choose PNG if a downstream tool demands it or you plan heavy re-editing and want to avoid any additional lossy step.

Why doesn't my 'HEIC' file convert?

Some files carry a .heic extension but use unusual encodings (e.g. certain burst or Live Photo exports). If one fails, open it on the phone and re-share it as a still image, or AirDrop/email it to yourself — iOS converts to JPG automatically when sharing to non-Apple targets.

About HEIC to JPG
