What about scanned PDFs?

A scan has no text layer, so this tool will find nothing to extract. Use the OCR to Word tool instead — it recognizes the text in the page images and produces a DOCX directly.

Are images and tables preserved?

Images are not carried over — the output is text only. Table contents come through as text lines but lose their grid structure, so complex tables need manual rebuilding in Word. If tables are the part you care about, PDF to Excel handles tabular data better.

Why are some headings missed or misdetected?

Heading detection relies on font size relative to the rest of the page. Documents where headings are the same size as body text (just bold or colored) won't trigger detection, and a page consisting only of large text can confuse the averages. The text itself is still extracted correctly.
